What to expect at your first consultation

If you have been referred to see Dr Cao, you may be wondering what happens at your first consultation. Here is a step-by-step guide so you know exactly what to expect.
Before your appointment. You will need a valid referral from your GP or specialist - GP referrals are valid for 12 months, and specialist referrals for 3 months. Please bring your referral letter, Medicare card, private health insurance card (if applicable), any imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) and reports, blood test results, biopsy or pathology reports, and a list of your current medications.
During the consultation. Dr Cao will review your medical history and referral, discuss your symptoms and concerns, and examine you (which may include a neck examination). She will review your imaging and test results, explain your diagnosis and treatment options, and discuss the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of any recommended surgery. There will be plenty of time for your questions.
You are welcome to bring a family member or friend - a second set of ears can be very helpful - and a chaperone is available for any examination if you wish.
After the consultation. If surgery is recommended, our team will guide you through the next steps, including any additional tests, a detailed quote, and booking your procedure at one of the hospitals where Dr Cao operates.
