The SAN's Emerging Oncology Insights GP Webinar: A Recap

In April 2026, Dr Jingyi Cao joined two specialist colleagues for Emerging Oncology Insights - a GP education webinar hosted by Sydney Adventist Hospital, designed to help GPs navigate key areas of cancer genetics, haematology and endocrinology. The full program is now available on demand as a CPD course.
The three sessions
1. “All in the family: When to offer genetic testing”
Dr Hilda High - Genetic Oncologist, The San Integrated Cancer Centre
Medicare-funded genetic testing is now available for all patients diagnosed with breast cancer at or before age 50 - and family history is often the clue. This session covered how to identify which individuals should be offered genetic testing based on personal and/or family history, and the resources available to support them.
2. “What’s new in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma?”
Dr Stephanie Hayes - Specialist Haematologist
An update on the management of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: key presenting features seen in general practice, current diagnostic pathways, and recent advances in treatment, including targeted therapies and immunotherapy - plus the GP’s role in early detection, referral and shared care.
3. “Thyroid cancer in primary care”
Dr Jingyi Cao - Head and Neck Surgeon, Surgical Oncologist
Thyroid nodules are common in general practice, and while most are benign, identifying the small proportion that represent thyroid cancer is essential. The session covered a practical overview of assessment and initial management - when to investigate, when to biopsy, and when referral is indicated - along with updates from the 2025 ATA guidelines, including risk-adapted surgery and active surveillance for selected low-risk cancers.
Why this matters for primary care
For GPs, the value of this program is practical: clear pathways for early detection, appropriate investigation, and knowing exactly when specialist referral is needed - for thyroid disease, lymphoma, and hereditary cancer risk alike. Early referral can make a significant difference to outcomes.
